Efter gymnasiet prövade han på lite olika jobb innan han utbildade sig till journalist på Journalisthögskolan. Som låtskrivare debuterade han med singeln <i>Påtalåten</i> 1973. Därefter arbetade han med låtskrivande, skivinspelningar och scenframträdanden på heltid. Tre år efter debuten var han med och toppade skivförsäljningen med albumet <i><b>Nya perspektiv</b></i>. Tolv album och en handfull singlar hann Ola med och hans låtar har också genom åren hittat fram till många andra artister. Ola Magnell har hedrats med Cornelis Vreeswijk-stipendiet, Nils Ferlin-sällskapets trubadurpris och Fred Åkerström-stipendiet.
