Set in 1899, the film follows medical school graduate Dr. Edward Newgate (Sturgess) as he arrives at Stonehearst Asylum, an institute for the mentally insane. There he meets the leader of the organisation, Dr. Silas Lamb (Kingsley), and one of his patients, Eliza Graves (Beckinsale), who Newgate becomes enamoured with. Shocked by the unconventional methods Lamb uses to treat his patients, Newgate decides to leave the asylum, determined to take Eliza with him. However, he discovers that everything is not as it seems and escaping turns out to be more difficult than he imagined...
