After the death of their mother, sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are forced to face their difficult family history when their estranged father Gustav (Skarsgård) re-enters their lives. A film director, he left Norway after his divorce and focused on his career which is now in decline. He wants to make a film inspired by his mother but when Nora, an actress, refuses to play her or even read the script, he casts American star Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning) instead and the production becomes increasingly troubled.
