Regissör John Ford tar oss med till den laglösa byn Shinbone, där den fruktade banditen Liberty Valance härjar. Stewart spelar den lite klumpige men charmige advokaten från storstan som bestämt sig för att befria Shinbone från Valance. Han får oväntad hjälp av en råbarkad ranchägare från trakten.
