Val Kilmer spelar Jim Morrison i Oliver Stones hallucinatoriska dramadokumentär om den mytomspunna 60-talsgruppen The Doors. Stone skär som en vass kniv genom Morrisons liv och inleder med ett barndomsminne där Morrison ser en äldre döende indian vid vägkanten. <br/><br/>Filmen fortsätter med Morrisons ankomst till Kalifornien och hans anpassning till kulturen kring Venice Beach. Vi får sedan följa hans studier i filmvetenskap vid UCLA, hur han träffar flickvännen Pamela Curson (Meg Ryan), hans första sammanträffande med Ray Manzarek (Kyle MacLachlan) och bildandet av bandet The Doors bestående av Manzarek, Robby Kreiger (Frank Whaley), och John Densmore (Kevin Dillon). Ju framgångsrikare The Doors blir, desto mer ökar Morrisons fixering vid döden.
