Mars 1945, veckorna före Tredje rikets fall. Genom Emslands landskap flyr en 20-årig tysk soldat undan en grupp nazister på jakt efter desertörer. Längs sin flyktväg finner han en död kapten och beslutar sig för att överta hans identitet. I samma stund som han sveper på sig naziuniformen övermannas han av en överväldigande maktkänsla, som närmaste tiden kommer utvecklas till storhetsvansinne. Från att ha varit en stackare på flykt blir han själv en av de svin han flytt ifrån - fast oerhört mycket värre!
