Set in 19th Century Tokyo, this film follows a lowly coal miner (Akira Kobayashi) who foments a riot against a tyrannical local figure (Tamio Kawaji) who specialises in making peoples lives miserable. The film explores pretty much every segment of the Japan underworld; the Yakuza, the right wing, Unionists and a tattooed geisha-gone-bad, doing just about everything the Japan tourism board denies ever went on in its country; sword play, adultery, riots, pistol fights, treachery, bribery, blackmail and miscellaneous assorted scandalousness. Suzuki let his hair down and rolled up his sleeves for this classic piece of Japanese cinema - a rollicking knees-up of oriental underbelly!

Typ: DVD

Suzuki takes a bleakly humorous look at the Japanese youth's tendency towards sadistic violence, positing, it seems, that it's no more than repressed sexuality. The protagonist, Kiroku (Hideki Takahashi), evolves from schoolyard bullyboy into a radical at the vortex of the socio-political revolution of the 1950s.

Typ: DVD
