Expecting the worst when he runs into a group of skinheads, Shaun's surprised when they turn out to be friendly and adopt him as one of their own. Suddenly the summer feels a whole lot better as Shaun discovers girls, parties, braces and an identity. Alan Darcy (Hoskins) wants to help the young people in his rundown town find a sense of purpose and unity and so he starts a boxing club and begins training them to fight. As the disparate groups of young men bond, Darcy organises a contest for them to prove themselves against members of a rival club, but escaping the violence in their everyday lives is not easy, even for Darcy.
