As a devastating drought takes hold of Henan province in China, a wealthy farmer named Fan (Guoli Zhang) manages to beat the struggle and maintains enough food to feed his family and the village. But that all changes when bandits rob and burn his village to the ground, murdering his son as they do so. Fan and his family are forced to flee with some of their fellow villagers, but more troubles follow as Fan's money and food supplies are stolen by army officials. This leads the starving and helpless family to make some tough decisions in order to acquire the necessities they so desperately need. Meanwhile an American journalist (Adrien Brody) examines the Government's policy on giving aid to refugees such as Fan, with serious consequences for both parties.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray</i>

'Battleship Potemkin' (1925), masterpiece of Russian silent film pioneer Sergei M. Eisenstein, is a dramatised account of the naval mutiny and street riots at the sea port of Odessa that sparked off the 1905 Russian Revolution. When the crew of the Potemkin protests after being given rotten meat as rations, the captain responds by ordering the execution of the dissidents. Outrage at this injustice quickly ignites and the townspeople have soon surrounded the harbour in a mass demonstration - but the scene gives way to tragedy and brutality as the authorities move in to quell the uprising. In British documentary 'Drifters' (1929), which was influenced by and originally screened alongside 'Battleship Potemkin' in the UK, director John Grierson looks at the North Sea herring fleets and the men who worked them. The film pays particular attention to how the once traditional industry has become a more modern enterprise.

'Rome, Open City' (1945) takes place during the last days of the Nazi occupation of Italy during World War II. Resistance leader Giorgio Manfredi (Marcello Pagliero) flees the Gestapo and seeks a place to hide with the help of his friend Francesco (Francesco Grandjacquet), his pregnant fiancée Pina (Anna Magnani) and the priest who is due to marry them, Don Pietro Pellegrini (Aldo Fabrizi). Giorgio's ex-girlfriend Marina (Maria Michi) betrays him and his fellow fighters to the Gestapo in order to get her hands on some luxury items and it's not long before the Nazis and the local police find him and Don Pietro. They are captured and tortured but will they crack under the pain or be executed for their silence? 'Paisà' (1946) is Rossellini's account of the liberation of Italy during World War II, told in six chapters. In each chapter a different view of the liberation is given as it spreads across the country. Different characters are also followed in each segment including American chaplains, soldiers, monks and prostitutes. Finally, 'Germany Year Zero' (1948) is Roberto Rossellini's moving account of life in post-war Germany telling the story of a 13-year old black marketeer who poisons his ailing father out of pity and necessity.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray / Box Set</i>

When Sir Robert Hunter (O'Toole) attempts an audacious plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler he is caught just before pulling the trigger and is subsequently tortured by the German authorities, but before they can kill him Thorndyke manages to escape back to England. Once back home he quickly realises that German agents are continuing to track him and he must use all his wit and cunning to evade their advances.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray / with DVD - Double Play</i>
