In order to reach Monterey however, Alice will have to stop off along the way to make enough money for her and Tommy to survive. Using the only talent she has, she plans to take singing gigs wherever possible. They stop in Arizona and Alice ends up having to work as a waitress in a diner while Tommy is largely left to fend for himself as his mum lapses back into old habits, relying on men to give her fulfilment. Part of the contract includes Mrs Herbert's agreement to comply with Mr Neville's sexual demands. Mrs Talmann (Anne Louise Lambert), Mrs Herbert's married but childless daughter, then blackmails Mr Neville into complying with her own sexual requests because she wants a baby. Meanwhile, Rokurota Makabe (Mifune), a renowed Akizuki general, is attempting to escort Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara) to safety. When he encounters the two peasants, he realises they may be useful to him but as the four of them travel together, they face many challenges and Tahei and Matashichi's cowardice and greed could jeopardise Makabe's mission.
