The first dream, 'Sunshine Through the Rain', depicts the belief that foxes marry when the sun shines through a rainstorm. 'The Peach Orchard' follows the link between a doll festival and fruit trees which have the power to bring the dolls to life. In 'The Blizzard', a group of mountaineers struggle to walk on as the snow hampers their progress. 'The Tunnel' follows the journey of a discharged commander who is returning home from the Second World War. In 'Crows', Martin Scorsese stars as Vincent Van Gogh who is discovered when an art student travels through one of his paintings. 'Mount Fuji in Red' follows the chaos that ensues after six reactors at a nuclear plant near Mount Fuji explode, filling the skies with bright red fumes. In 'The Weeping Demon', a boy lost in the mountains comes across a horned man who explains that a holocaust has wiped out the human race. Private Mizushima (Shôji Yasui) is the harp player for Captain Inouye (Rentarô Mikuni)'s regiment. They have been fighting in Burma but when they come across a group of British soldiers, they learn that Japan has surrended and the war is over. A small band of Japanese soldiers are fighting nearby and a British captain asks Mizushima if he can convince them to surrender and save their lives. However, they refuse his entreaties and are killed in the ensuing attack. In the aftermath, Mizushima disguises himself as a Buddhist monk and embarks on a journey to promote peace whilst also burying the dead Japanese soldiers he encounters as he travels. Soon afterwards, mobster Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) arrives in town, convinced that Tom is actually Joey Cusack, a mob hitman. Despite Tom's protestations to the contrary, Carl begins stalking Tom and his family and the situation escalates to violence. An immediate attraction sparks between the two and gradually Phyllis seduces Walter into conspiring with her to murder her husband, who is now covered by a double indemnity insurance policy. The murder is carried out as planned but the couple soon find themselves growing increasingly suspicious of each other as they get closer to collecting the money. When Walter's boss, the relentless investigator Barton Keyes (Edward G. Spending his spare time bowling, drinking and sleeping with women, Robert is shocked when his girlfriend Rayette (Karen Black) announces that she is pregnant. Meeting up with his concert pianist sister Partita (Lois Smith), he learns that their father does not have long to live. Rayette sees Robert in a new light when he reveals that he, too, is a classical pianist, and accompanies him when he decides to return to his family home in Washington.
