The performance took place at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, and marked the end of the group's 16 years of touring. Set in 17th century England, Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) performs in a travelling circus and is the star attraction as a result of a childhood punishment that has resulted in him having a fixed and grotesque smile. Ashamed of this disfigurement Gwynplaine only ever shows his smile when on stage. When it transpires that Gwynplaine is descended from royalty he is offered an opportunity to marry Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova).
