Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz are far and away two of the greatest legends of jazz. This album is like two sax shaped butterflies, one baritone, one tenor darting around one another. Together Mulligan and Getz make the most sublime combinations and riff off each other with a musical choreography that is dazzling. They also improvise simultaneously with great results. They even swap horns for several songs....Getz playing baritone and Mulligan playing tenor with Lou Levy on Piano, Ray Brown on bass and the great Stan Levey is on drums. The album contain two bonus tracks: Charlie Parker's "Scrapple From The Apple (8:09)" and Lorenz Hart & Richard Rogers' "I Didn't Know What Time it Was (8:59)."

This album is a superb collection of Frank and friends from a part of Frank's career that's long been underrated. Here, Sinatra scales the jazz summit with Louis Armstrong on "Birth Of The Blues" and does three electrifying collaborations with one of his favorites, Ella Fitzgerald. Ella's voice is at her best in each. Rival Elvis Presley gets the Chairman's respect on a wonderfully playful meeting-of-the-icons medley of "Witchcraft"/"Love Me Tender." The tunes are bright and lively and many benefit from Nelson Riddle's arranging genius. Frank and Dean are great, improvising and playing off one another as always. But wait until you hear "Together" in which Bing joins Dino and Frank for a happy, hilarious threesome.

Paul Chambers Jr. (1935-1969) was a jazz double bassist who was the anchor for trumpeter Miles Davis for eight years. Chambers' contribution on "Kind Of Blue" is considered to be some of the most rhythmically and harmonically supportive bass playing in the history of jazz. Chambers' masterpiece 'Bass On Top' opens with "Yesterdays" which has some of the most beautiful bowed bass you can hear, with a sensitive but subtle support from Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones, and Art Taylor. "Dear Old Stockholm" is a another great beauty. (Also recorded on Davis' 'Round Midnight', with a great Paul Chambers solo). "I'm Confessin' That I Love You" is essential Paul alone for four minutes of pure beauty.

When it comes to vocal jazz, the ladies win. "Body and Soul" features great jazz standards sung by some of the best-known and most influential female jazz vocalists in history. Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan: these performers are so beloved that their first names are enough. This album presents signature recordings by these legendary ladies.
