Ryan is also seeking vengeance but is determined to travel alone. However, their paths continue to cross and they each lend assistance to the other until Bill learns that Ryan is harbouring a terrible secret. As the post comes under increasing threat from the Apache Indians Yorke's ex-wife, Kathleen (Maureen O'Hara), arrives to return her underage son back home, however, Jefferson is adamant about staying put. When local doctor Samantha O'Dwyer (Lili Simmons) suddenly goes missing along with a crook and deputy sheriff the only clue left behind is a single arrow, the marker of a group known as the 'Troglodytes', infamous for their brutality and cannibalism. Samantha's husband Arthur (Patrick Wilson) sets out with a team of three men to retrieve their captive townsfolk. The band includes Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell), womaniser John Brooder (Matthew Fox) and 'back up deputy sheriff' Chicory (Richard Jenkins). A truce is called, and the two men become firm friends.
