Haunted by the murder of his entire family, Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) seizes control of the declining Roman Empire, beginning a tyrannical reign of depravity, destruction, and madness. Malcolm McDowell stars as the titular Roman emperor in this erotic historical drama which chronicles his rise and fall. After the death of his great-uncle Tiberius (Peter O'Toole), Caligula is proclaimed the new emperor. He wants to be with his sister and lover Drusilla (Teresa Ann Savoy) but she insists they cannot marry and so instead he weds Caesonia (Helen Mirren). However, although he is initially popular with the people, the Senate soon disapproves of his increasingly self-indulgent and extravagant behaviour. As darker and crueller aspects of his personality emerge, a plot to assassinate him gains momentum. This Ultimate Cut has been re-edited using the original camera negatives to incorporate alternative footage and follow the original screenplay more closely.
