Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer star in this musical drama adapted from the Broadway stage show. In 1957 in New York City's Upper West Side, Tony and Maria (Beymer and Wood) fall in love and are caught on opposite sides of a violent gang war. The Jets and the Sharks are sworn enemies and Maria is the sister of Bernardo (George Chakiris), the leader of the Sharks, while Tony is a former Jet and the best friend of Riff (Russ Tamblyn), their leader. Despite their best efforts, nothing Tony or Maria can say will persuade the gangs to end the escalating conflict and tragedy awaits. The cast also includes Rita Moreno, Ned Glass and Simon Oakland.
