I 1830-talets Australien består en stor del av befolkningen av brittiska fångar som avtjänat sina straff i kolonin. En av dem är Sam Flusky, som landsförvisades efter att ha dömts för mord. Nu är han en förmögen affärsman som lever på sitt ståtliga gods ihop med mordoffrets vackra syster, aristokraten Henrietta, som sjunkit in i alkoholism orsakat av ett abnormt självförakt. När guvernörens brorson kommer på besök blir han förälskad i Henrietta och ser som sin uppgift att göra henne frisk igen. Men är Henriettas förflutna orsaken till hennes tillstånd, eller är det någon som konspirerar för att driva henne till vansinne?<br/><br/>Kritikerna på legendariska Cahiers du Cinema i Frankrike utnämnde 1958 denna film till en av tidernas tio bästa. Till huvudrollerna valde Hitchcock två av sina favoriter. Dels Ingrid Bergman, som innehaft huvudrollerna i både Trollbunden och Notorious, och dels Joseph Cotten, som var affischnamnet i Skuggan av ett tvivel. De båda spelade även mot varandra i Gasljus.
