Takashi Shimura plays the drunken angel of the title, a doctor working in a devastatingly poor area of immediately-post-war Tokyo. The area is overrun with competing gangsters who have lost most of their power during the American occupation. Toshiro Mifune - in the first leading role that made him a star - plays a handsome young hoodlum who one night comes to the doctor's surgery with a small bullet wound in his hand. The doctor treats the wound but also diagnoses Mifune as having tuberculosis. The gangster's arrogance prevents him from acknowledging his illness, but his position within his organisation increasingly comes under threat.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

Domineering Dr Niide (Mifune), known as 'Red Beard', is responsible for training new doctors, among them the lazy and socially ambitious Yasumoto (Yuzo Kayama). Meanwhile, Rokurota Makabe (Mifune), a renowed Akizuki general, is attempting to escort Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara) to safety. When he encounters the two peasants, he realises they may be useful to him but as the four of them travel together, they face many challenges and Tahei and Matashichi's cowardice and greed could jeopardise Makabe's mission. His estranged half-brother Ken (Maki) is a small-time drug dealer there and Yamamoto soon forges a successful operation and begins attacking rival gangs and taking control of their territory. However, when they come up against the Italian Mafia, they enter into a fight that they may not be able to win. If he pays the ransom he will be ruined financially but if he does not, he will be unable to face his family or Aoki. One weekend Taeko feigns an illness to her husband in order to enjoy a spa weekend with some friends, including her niece Setsuko (Keiko Tsushima).
