The samurai begin arming and training the villagers as well as fortifying their homes as they prepare for the coming attack, fully aware that the odds are stacked against them. In 'Tokyo Twilight' (1957) graduate Akiko Sugiyama (Ineko Arima) is looking for her boyfriend, Kenji (Masami Taura), with whom she has a troubled relationship, when she meets a woman she believes may be her long-lost mother. Akiko's older sister, Takako (Setsuko Hara), tries to protect her from finding out about how their mother abandoned them but Akiko soon learns the truth with tragic consequences. In 'Woman of Tokyo' (1933) Chikako (Yoshiko Okada) works day and night to pay for her young brother, Ryoichi (Ureo Egawa)'s, university expenses. As the wage from her office job does not cover the costs, Chikako also works as a prostitute during the night, which Ryoichi is unaware of. When his girlfriend, whose brother is a policeman, finds out about Chikako's double life the situation spirals out of control. In 'Early Spring' (1956) office worker Shoji Sugiyama (Ryô Ikebe) is bored with his marriage to Masako (Chikage Awashima) and embarks on an affair with flirtatious colleague Kaneko (Keiko Kishi). In 'Throne of Blood' (1957), after securing a great victory in battle for their lord Tsuzuki (Takamaru Sasaki), samurai commanders and friends Taketoki Washizu (Mifune) and Yoshiaki Miki (Minoru Chiaki) meet a mysterious spirit in the Spider's Web Forest who prophesies their rise to power. When the first part of the spirit's prediction comes true, Washizu tells his wife Asaji (Isuzu Yamada) about the rest of the prophecy and her ambition leads him to commit murder, an act which seals both of their fates. 'The Hidden Fortress' (1958) follows the exploits of Tahei (Chiaki) and Matashichi (Kamatari Fujiwara), two peasants hoping to make their fortunes by becoming soldiers. They run into trouble when they are mistaken for members of the Akizuki clan which has just been defeated after a fierce battle. Meanwhile, Rokurota Makabe (Mifune), a renowed Akizuki general, is attempting to escort Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara) to safety. When he encounters the two peasants, he realises they may be useful to him but as the four of them travel together, they face many challenges and Tahei and Matashichi's cowardice and greed could jeopardise Makabe's mission. In 'Yojimbo' (1961) wandering samurai Sanjuro Kuwabatake (Mifune) arrives in a rural town in 19th century Japan which is overrun with criminals and is being fought over by two rival gangs. Determined to free the townsfolk from the oppressive grip of the gangsters, Sanjuro sparks open war between the two sides in the hope that they will destroy each other. However, his plans are complicated by the arrival of Unosuke (Tatsuya Nakadai), the younger brother of one of the gang leaders who prefers guns to swords and upsets the balance of power in the town. Finally, in the sequel 'Sanjuro' (1962), Sanjuro Tsubaki encounters a clan of samurai who have been betrayed by the local superintendent. They had intended to present a formal accusation of corruption within their clan but would have been crushed by the superintendent's men had Sanjuro not defended them. Sanjuro soon finds himself embroiled in a plot to kidnap the local chamberlain and facilitate a power grab by the superintendent, but jaded as he is, Sanjuro feels he must also object to the behaviour of his fellow samurai.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>

'Days of Youth' (1929), Ozu's earliest surviving feature, follows a love triangle between two college friends (Ichirô Yuki and Tatsuo Saitô) as they both try to win the affections of a girl (Junko Matsui) they meet on a skiing holiday. In 'I Flunked, But...' (1930) a student (Saitô) does anything he can to get out of doing revision. In 'The Lady and the Beard' (1931) recently graduated traditionalist Kiichi Okajima (Tokihiko Okada) shaves his old-fashioned beard when he falls for a modern woman and, as he pursues her, attracts the attentions of two other women. In 'Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth?' (1932) Taichiro Saiki (Saitô)'s friendships are threatened when he takes over his father's company and employs three of his former university buddies. As a new dynamic is added to Taichiro's relationship with the others, their friendships come under strain, eventually leading to a disturbing climax.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

In 'Record of a Tenement Gentleman' (1947) Kohei (Hôhi Aoki) follows fortune teller Tashiro (Chishû Ryû) home after he becomes separated from his father while visiting Tokyo. Tashiro and his friends are struggling in the aftermath of the war but Kohei's brief presence in their lives changes their perspective on life. The silent drama 'Dragnet Girl' (1933) follows Tokiko (Kinuyo Tanaka), a typist, and her boyfriend Joji (Jôji Oka), a small-time gangster. When she realises that Joji is attracted to another woman, her priorities change, but will she be able to find the redemption she seeks? Finally, in 'A Hen in the Wind' (1948) Tokiko (Tanaka) awaits her husband's return from the war. Barely able to make ends meet, when her four-year-old son becomes sick, she is unable to pay for his care. Desperate, she prostitutes herself for one night but when her husband returns and learns what she did to save their son, he struggles to forgive her.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray</i>

In 'Maborosi' (1995) Yumiko (Makiko Esumi) is newly married with a young baby but when tragedy strikes and her husband Ikuo (Tadanobu Asano) is killed in an apparent suicide, she is deeply troubled by her loss. Despite remarrying and moving to the coast, the death of Ikuo continues to haunt her as she struggles to find meaning in the world. In 'After Life' (1998) the dead arrive in limbo and are invited to select one memory that they wish to carry with them to the afterlife. Over the following week, the recently deceased think back over their lives, looking for the moment that meant the most to them. In 'Nobody Knows' (2004) 12-year-old Akira (Yûya Yagira) wakes up to find a note from his mother which includes some money and instructions about looking after his three younger siblings while she is away. The children cope well to begin with, helping each other with the housework, and Akira ensures that the bills are paid. However, when their mother fails to return after several weeks, the children are forced to deal with an increasingly chaotic situation as Akira tries to prevent their landlord from finding out the truth. Finally, in 'Still Walking' (2008), middle-aged art restorer Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) and his sister Chinami (You) return to their childhood home with their own families for a gathering to mark the 15th anniversary of the death of their older brother who drowned while saving another boy's life. As the family reconnect over the course of one summer day, they continue to struggle to come to terms with their loss and so tensions increase between Ryota and his father Kyohei (Yoshio Harada).<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray / Box Set</i>
